A little bit more about Emma Prew…

Emma Prew

I am Emma Prew.

Older than 20 years old, younger than 30 years old. I was born in and grew up in Milton Keynes, the town that wishes it was a city; famous for it's concrete cows, roundabouts and grid-like road system. I like to think the ‘grid-system’ in some way influenced my love for editorial design, but I'm probably making that up.

As a child, I wanted to be a dog when I grew up – see The Child Who… Eventually I came to terms with the fact that that simply wasn't possible. So, I drew pictures instead. At age 15 (I've skipped about a decade of my life there, I'm sure nothing major happened) I became vaguely aware of graphic design. Upon attending an open day at Milton Keynes College for their National Diploma in Graphic Design, I knew that was exactly what I wanted to do. So, after my GCSEs, I threw away all previous expectations of doing A Levels and went to college instead (2007–2009). It paid off. I learned a great deal from some amazing tutors and left, after two years, with a decent portfolio of work and a triple distinction grade.

This was enough to secure me a place on the BA Graphic Design course at University College Falmouth (2009–2012). I have always loved Cornwall and find myself very at home by the sea, but the main thing that drew me towards Falmouth was the course itself. Falmouth has a great reputation and I now know why. Choosing to move 300 miles away to do what I love in a place that I love was definitely one of the best decision I've ever made – so far. I learnt so much in my time at UCF, not just graphic design-wise but just general life skills. I grew a lot as a person. However, the Falmouth-times have long since come to an end and whilst I enjoyed every last second of it, I am now loving life in the ‘real world’! But oh, do I miss the sea air…

I am currently working happily as a graphic designer at emc design in Bedfordshire, with a lovely bunch of people. At emc, I work on the design and layout of books for print as well as online resource material. I do text formatting, typesetting, proof corrections and design. I also write posts for the emc design blog and actively interact with the company Twitter account.

As well as my day job, I enjoy taking on personal and freelance projects when I can, keeping my creative mind busy at all times.
